Cross-Country Skiing

The Mt. Ashwabay/Jerry Jolly Cross-Country trail system covers 40 km of  classic and skate trails with ratings from beginner to expert. All trails inspected daily and are groomed and tracked as needed. The beginner’s trail is the picturesque Sugar Bush Trail. Intermediate terrain can be enjoyed on Anchor, Seagull and Raven trails. Advanced skiers can venture out on the longer 15 km loop, which combines Sugar Bush, Deer Path and Raven trails, returning to the Mt. Ashwabay chalet.

If the chalet is closed, please use the self-pay tube on the kiosk on the north west side of the chalet.

We have a porti-potti on site for days when the chalet is closed, as well as a small heated changing room.

Mt. Ashwabay is the proud home of 4-H CANSKI (Chequamegon Area Nordic Ski Club). 4-H CANSKI is a collaboration amoung UW-Extension 4H Youh development; Washburn, Bayfield, and Ashland schools; AOEF and community skiers. 4-H CANSKI provides 130 area youth and adults a structure for multigenerational, community recreation and healthy outdoor lifestyles. Eighteen adult members vounteer their time and expertise as coaches.

Most 4-H CANSKI kids ski simply for fun and recreation. Some of the youth compete in races as part of the racing team. The boys team took 6th at the 2010 state high school championship! Summer activies include service projects and trail maintainence. Leadership development with youth is also a huge component of 4-H CANSKI activies. Our grooming is primarily done by volunteer groups such as CHASTA and Friends of Lake Superior Nordic Trails.

Current Condtions:

Alpine: 90% Open: D4, Port Way, Little Joe, and Bunny Hill have an artificial base of with 12-18", and in excellent condition.   Recent fresh snow makes other runs skiable, but coverage is thin.  Groomed this morning.

XC: Open. Sugarbush groomed this morning, and is fairly soft and skiable.  Anchor, Rollercoast, Seagull, Telford Loop all groomed and tracked last night.  Deer Path is not recommended due to ice and bare spots.

Tubing: Closed.  Not enough snow.

Park: Table-Top on lower D4 with chair tower set as a cannon.  A smattering of boxes are on the lower right hand side of Little Joe.
