The Ashwabay fat bike trail was groomed today. I used the drag and the tread is looking good. The snow was dry and will probably be a bit loose on top, but there is a firm trail base. Low pressure is still the way to go.
-Avery Most of the trail base survived the warm up and we received an initial 2+ inches of heavy snow after that. Then the lake effect snow machine has turned on. The trail is starting to level out. The next grooming should make a nice even tread.
The Fat Bike Trail might be a little on the soft side, so use low pressure. Riding it will only make it better. Snowshoers are welcome to help compact the trail. All pedestrians need to have snowshoes on in order to avoid making boot divots. Please use the main Ashwabay parking area. The trail starts to the left upon entering the parking area. It will probably be a busy weekend with the ski hill opening and the Nordic skiing conditions being very good. FYI the mountain bike Trailhead is no longer accessible because it's not plowed and won't be. MIKE After the 6 to 10 inches last weekend and then the couple 2 3 inches yesterday it was time to start packing the Ashwabay fat bike trails. I focused my efforts on the parts that don't use the summer trails since they had the most snow. Conditions are likely on the softer side but worth a ride for the adventurous. Snowshoeing would help compaction. Bring a lopper because there's a few saplings sticking up from the trail. We will have to wait a bit to groom again since it's thin in some areas.
Of note the some of summer single track trails only have a thin layer of snow and have been boot packed. So Get Up, Get Down, Diesel Bear, Magic Carpet and Dirt Lip part 3 are ridable on a fat bike. The rest of the system has more snow and is essentially closed or a back country adventure. MIKE |
